Spela Ramovs is the proud mother of four-year-old Rui, who has been a Helen Doron English student in Kranj, Slovenia since he was only a year old. His baby sister will also begin classes soon, as the family loves to travel and know they need good English to communicate anywhere in the world.

Spela tells us that she and her husband often recommend Helen Doron to others. “The whole family is actually enjoying Helen Doron, as we are also learning new words we didn’t know before. This way we are stretching our vocabulary beyond business use of English, learning flowers, birds, breeds etc. – interesting indeed! It is really exciting for all the students, but the most valuable for us is seeing our son learning a second language through fun games and movement naturally, with no pressure. We are delighted we can offer this experience to our kids, having Helen Doron in Kranj and being able to attend. Big thanks goes to our teachers that are creative and full of energy and welcome you with a big smile. Rui loves attending class and looks forward to going!”

This blog is part two in a discussion on language development in children and how they can easily learn a second, third – even fourth language. In this second part of our discussion, we’ll start off by looking at the importance of exposure to language.

Input = Output

You may remember this formula from Part I, which says that if you want your child to be bilingual, you must expose him or her to multiple languages as much and as often as possible.

Perhaps there is a babysitter who can speak to them in his or her native language? Maybe there is a nearby bilingual kindergarten. And let’s not forget about grandma and grandpa: If they were born in another country, perhaps they can speak to the child in their native tongue?

Providing multi-language exposure is giving your child a gift for life. And that gift involves far more than mere language – you are actually developing their brain’s plasticity, which means their ability to change and adapt, and we all know how important that is. Quite simply, nothing develops the brain more than learning another language, or two, or even three. In fact, studies have shown that the benefits of learning numerous languages are multiple, from improving concentration and memory, to staving off dementia, later in life.

Correcting mistakes – how and when

This is a big issue for a lot of parents, and I’m often asked about the proper way to correct a child who is learning to speak. There is no one rule for every child or every circumstance, but a general guide, especially for the early years, would be to pay far more attention to what goes into your child, than what comes out. In fact, if you make sure the right stuff goes in, then eventually, that is what’s going to come out

Parent-child connection

The last thing we’ll look at in this post is the importance of the adult-child relationship.

Early language development happens when there is trust, love and connection between you and the child. After your baby is born, a remarkable interplay begins to happen: You speak and the baby responds by imitating you. You then show empathy by imitating the child’s expressions. You don’t even realize that you are doing it but you are, and this continues, back and forth, building the connection between you, which supports their language development.

As the child gets older, the relationship develops, and this interplay of facial expressions transforms into verbal communication. And here is where reading to the child can take on several purposes. If you don’t become too become fixated to what’s printed on the page, then reading time can actually become a springboard into rich conversations.

When I read to my granddaughter, Ria, she’s got a million questions. I was recently reading to her a lovely story about a mouse that was so small, no one else in the jungle ever noticed he was there. It was a marvellous book, but what really captured Ria were the bandages on the mouse’s tail. What had happened to his tail, she wanted to know. I explained that the elephant had trodden on its tail and the zebra had sat on it. She must have asked me the same question dozens of times because that is what intrigued her. And even had her questions borne no relevance to the story, it wouldn’t have mattered – because she was engaged with the book, and worried about what was going to happen, and relating to it from her own life. Most importantly, it became a catalyst for our conversation, through which her ability to understand and express language was being nourished.

Conclusion

It is truly never too early to begin introducing more than one language to your child. The earlier the better, because the window for learning a language at mother-tongue level stays open only until the age of seven. By doing so, you are helping to develop your child’s brain for life, and in a way that extends well beyond mere language learning. You are helping them to become more tolerant of others, and to develop the capacity for richer concepts, which will accompany them all the days of their life.

Millions of children have learnt English with the unique Helen Doron methodology.

Aware of the benefits of early language learning, proud Croatian parents Marina and Leonard started their two daughters, Ana (4) and Maria (2) in Helen Doron classes when they were babies, and are thrilled that they did!

“Both of the girls are very happy to come to Helen Doron classes at the Lendava, Slovenia Learning Studio where they enjoy the activities, and love to dance, sing and play with the teacher and the other kids. Even when they are at home, they play that they are in English class! Ana’s English is much better than her school classmates, as she has correct pronunciation and a good vocabulary. Both girls are very proud of their English progress and like to talk to everyone about their Helen Doron teacher, friends from class and fun activities.”

Marina, who wishes she had a better command of the English language, explains why she insisted on sending her children at such a young age. “If you are good in English, you will have more self-confidence in school and qualify for student exchange programmes. Adults with good English do better in global business settings and from my personal experience, the best job positions are reserved for people who are fluent in English.”

Why Helen Doron and not one of their competitors? “Helen Doron is designed for children from when they are babies, when the brain is like a sponge and it is easy to learn. The courses are fun and full of songs and activities for children and they learn English like a mother tongue, first learning vocabulary they use in daily conversation, and later learning writing is easy, as they already know the words.” The family also uses the wide variety of Helen Doron educational apps at home, and appreciates all of the tools provided.

Over the past 30 years, I have seen and experienced how the Helen Doron methodology has helped children successfully learn English. While I am gratified that the method has been effective, I was interested to hear from teachers, teacher trainers, franchisees and Master Franchisors that the effectiveness of the method has gone beyond the classroom and has individually changed their family lives, their relationships and even the way they do business.

I am not surprised because the Helen Doron method isn’t about just teaching English; it gives the teachers and their students a mind-set and a foundation for success that extends beyond the classroom.

I was recently contacted through social media by a gentleman who told me that the methodology had a lasting impact on him. A former Helen Doron English teacher, he understood that the learning process is dynamic and that it is necessary to adapt content and the method for learning to match the stage and level of development of the learner. As his teaching experience and career role changed, he moved to the U.S. and was able to take the tools he learnt in his HDE teacher training and successfully apply them to his work in industrial design.

Helen Doron teachers are trained to provide positive reinforcement and build on how children naturally learn. The whole process of learning reinforces for the child that ‘yes, he can!’ He is encouraged and nurtured and this support is, in so many ways, counter to the traditional methods of teaching and even, of parenting. The methodology teaches people and takes them through a process of how to give feedback and how to help children grow. This positive approach creates a healthy mind set which affects all our relationships, not just those in the classroom.

This is how parents should encourage their children. While parents might feel that they need to be critical or negative, it is truly unnecessary. When parents understand that positive reinforcement is a wonderful example for their children, it can extend to all their relationships. Family life improves, even professionally to train others; it can be used anywhere.

Helen Doron English teacher training courses not only provide international qualifications that allow the teacher to teach anywhere in the world, but gives them valuable life skills. In our teacher trainer courses, I see teachers go through a process. It is not just learning how to give positive feedback, it is about reaching deeper, learning to go back inside and be a child and come out in a positive manner. The playfulness brings the teacher out and teaches them techniques that they can use for life. I would not be surprised if people come on the course just to be deeply ingrained in our philosophy. They are being given skills for life.

Elizaveta Biba (Liza) is the director of the Helen Doron Learning Center in Tirana and the national representative of Helen Doron English in Albania.

Originally from Russia, Liza has been learning English throughout her life, “through the Russian school system, a private course with native speakers and studying in UK and working in USA for awhile.” She found the traditional method lf learning languages in school to be a struggle. “That’s why when I think about the advantages of the natural, easy learning of English as a mother tongue, through games and songs and hands-on experience – I am totally in love with the way the Helen Doron methodology works.”

As an immigrant, Liza found a lot lacking for preschool children. “It has been my dream to offer greater learning opportunities to children in Albania. When I moved to Tirana, I could not find any play and learn activities for preschool age. There was nothing to stimulate healthy mind and body growth. So, I searched for stimulating English programmes for children and I found the Helen Doron Early English methodology. “

With great enthusiasm, Liza decided to become a Helen Doron teacher “to give a new experience of learning English with ease and fun to the children of Albania. In July 2012 I opened my learning centre and was pleased to have both Albanian and foreign families who valued the method and chose the easy way for their children to learn English.”

She continued about why the Helen Doron method works so well. “What I love most about the method is that it is completely child-centered, so the children love and enjoy the lessons. We all know when we love something and enjoy doing it, it is effortless for us to learn. We have specially developed materials and lesson plans and are taught special skills. Thanks to the pedagogic team who puts together the language content considering the needs of children at each stage, and the teacher trainers for their skills and knowledge—learning is fun and easy.”

According to Ms. Biba, the children learn much more than the English language. “They acquire positive social experience in the small group setting, they grow in self-confidence and develop communication skills, they learn about other cultures …all while having fun! As a mom, I can see the results of this on my own daughter. She is 2.7 years now and started the program for babies, “Babies Best Start” at the age of 8 months, and then continued the second year with “It is a Baby Dragon”. She speaks 3 languages with no struggle, naturally. I know I gave her the best experience of early development and early English I could through the Helen Doron English method. I am excited to see her growing in 3 languages, as this is a lifetime experience and advantage.”

She is also thrilled with the career opportunities the company offers. “I love my job as a teacher and owner of a learning centre. As a result, after five successful years in Tirana I decided to go further and become the national representative of Helen Doron English in Albania, expanding the opportunity for children across the country. If you want to be a part of an internationally successful business and you would love to spread the passion for English to children in your city, join the Helen Doron Franchise network today.”

The method is based on the idea that music is a language and that children should learn to play music in the same way they learn their native language. This is accomplished through repeated home hearings of the music to be studied and positive activities in class, accompanied by positive teacher feedback.

This realization led me to believe that language learning, particularly teaching English as a foreign language, should be approached in a similar manner. In 1985, I began teaching English to young children aged 1 to 6, with the goal of testing my theory that young children learn a foreign language best through repeated exposure and positive reinforcement from the teacher.

I made audio cassettes of myself singing and playing the piano, as well as home recordings of poems and stories, to provide the necessary background exposure. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and I had many more students the following year. This made me realize the importance of training teachers in methodology and developing professional learning materials.

My true passion has always been teaching English to young children because I believe that establishing a strong foundation in language skills at a young age can have a long-term impact on a child’s development and future success. Up to the age of seven, the early years of a child’s life are critical for brain development, and the right mental and physical stimulation can help create greater brain connectivity and prepare children for success.

Discover more about the Helen Doron English and Helen Doron Academy language learning programs, as well as the benefits of obtaining a TEFL certification to teach English as a foreign language. Consider language education options like language schools and private tutors, as well as the distinct benefits that native English speakers have.

Seeing my students use English skills that they learned in my classroom is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. I also love seeing my Baby’s Best Start students grow and develop with each other. It’s almost magical how their faces change right before your eyes. Having the comfort of knowing that parents trust you to be an influential part of their children’s lives makes it really easy to get up in the morning and go to work”.

How is Helen Doron different? “I taught at other schools in Hong Kong where the kids were expected to stay in their chairs for most of the lesson. I love how our lessons encourage movement and exploration outside of the classroom. At Helen Doron, we bring in real foods and materials of different textures: such a vibrant and well-rounded curriculum! Our class sizes are also smaller than most other schools. I think this makes it easier to connect with the students and their parents. “

Regardless of which of the nearly 1,000 locations you work in throughout the world, the methodology is stimulating and produces happy children who speak English—and the teachers love their chosen careers. “The environment really gets your creative juices flowing. I met so many wonderful people while working as a Helen Doron teacher. I became good friends with so many teachers and students’ parents. I still keep in touch with my colleagues, my lovely bosses, and my students and their parents in Thailand. Becoming a Helen Doron teacher only added more value to my life. If you love children and love to get creative with them, then contact the nearest Helen Doron Learning Centre. You too will meet some of the most passionate and fascinating people!”

Find out how YOU can become a Helen Doron teacher!

Ana from Zadar, Croatia grew up speaking both English and Croatian. She explains, “My determined mother always dreamt of studying English and becoming a teacher, so she exposed me to English very early. Although her wish never came true, she passed her love for English on to me. So successfully, in fact, that I got a degree in English teaching and made a career out of it! My 1 ½ year old daughter, Korina, goes to Helen Doron Baby’s Best Start classes, and we try to expose her to English as much as possible. “

In 2009, Ana completed her degree and started searching for a job. “I saw an ad that the first Helen Doron English centre was opening in Zagreb and that they were looking for teachers. I knew very little about the method back then, so I started googling and immediately fell in love with the whole concept. I sent my CV to our National Franchisor, Danijela Haralovic, met with her for an interview, and the rest is history. I moved to Zagreb and became one of the first two certified Helen Doron teachers in Croatia, and I was hooked for life!”

Eight exciting years later, Ana has taught all of the courses: starting with babies, all the way through the teen courses.

Ana explains her personal philosophy about her chosen career. “I am first and foremost, a teacher who loves her job and my goal is not only to educate children, but also care for their general well-being. Working with children, watching them learn with such ease and seeing how quickly their confidence grows from lesson to lesson is the best part of this job. Throughout all of these years I had countless moments during my classes where I whispered to myself (or shouted out loud) that I truly have the best job in the world. I love the fact that as a Helen Doron teacher you constantly have to work on yourself and learn, attend seminars and improve your teaching skills, there are always new challenges, classes and groups so work never becomes dull. I am proud to say that the Helen Doron English method is well-known in Zadar, so we are always filled to capacity. It’s a lot of work, but when you love what you do, success comes naturally.”

She is proud of what she is accomplished and how Helen Doron stands out from the competition. “Immediately upon entering our Learning Centre, it’s obvious that our school is unlike any other. We have highly trained, dedicated teachers that hold classes in a friendly and colourful environment. Our methodology and programmes are unique and based on up-to-date scientific research. We have high-quality learning materials and we even implement modern technology into our teaching. Children are taught in small groups of eight while singing, dancing and participating in fun games and activities, exclusively in English, without any translation, which allows them to learn English in the most natural way possible.”

As a parent herself, Ana’s message to other parents is “What are you waiting for? Giving your child the gift of learning English at an early age is a great gift and one of your best investments. Helen Doron is so much more than English; we socialize your children, boost their confidence and teach them to grow into caring and responsible human beings.”

When we teach, values are always implicit. Showing respect for others, taking turns, assuming responsibility and turning in assignments on time are key values that are an integral part of what students learn in school. These values teach children not only to be good class members, but are a basis for learning to become good citizens and community members.

Which values are best?

The question isn’t whether or not teachers should be teaching values, but what kinds of values should teachers help students develop. First, by being a positive role model, a teacher models the right behaviours. These include honesty, showing respect for others, taking responsibility for one’s actions, cooperation and caring. Students are the reflections of their teacher. The way teacher acts, behaves and talks, is observed and evaluated by the student.

Secondly, by teaching students how to think and evaluate what they are learning, they are teaching values along with course content. For example, a lesson that teaches about Earth Day not only teaches facts and numbers, but also about caring for the environment.

Language impacts our values

English teachers, by the very nature of their course content, teach values. The languages that we learn and speak impact the way we think, the way we see the world, and the way we live our lives. When children learn a second language, they learn more than words. They learn about different cultures, about different ways of thinking and about how to accept and respect differences.

More than 30 years of experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language has shown me that the original methodology that our trained Helen Doron teachers use in the classroom to teach English supports learning good values. Our teachers use positive reinforcement, which teaches students respect for others, as well as respect for themselves. Learning through fun and games in small groups of 4-8 students teaches good sportsmanship and team building skills.

Be part of a global community

Helen Doron is a community and Helen Doron lessons bring out communal awareness. This is something we teach in our classes. While I don’t usually use this blog format as a personal platform, I am quite pleased to announce our global campaign, Young Heroes, which empowers children to bring about change in their communities. The campaign will run from April to June, 2017 and speaks directly to values of Helen Doron English: teaching students about caring for each other, the environment and the community. Helen Doron English learning centres from all over Europe. South America and Asia will be participating in this worthwhile campaign that encourages children to embrace their inner hero and become better world citizens. We’re calling on all students to join our campaign. The Young Heroes project isn’t limited to Helen Doron English students; anyone from a school, club or community centre who wants to form a team and participate in this worthy endeavor can do so. Anyone can be a Young Hero!

Young Heroes emphasizes that being a hero doesn’t require superpowers or even special skills. It is about children working together as a team to improve the lives of the people and animals around them.

The Young Heroes project is divided into three key phases: Discover. Dream. Do. Under the guidance of our teachers and with the support of their parents, we encourage children to go out into the community and Discover challenges that need solving. Next, they are asked to Dream up solutions. Finally, they are asked to carry out the project — to Do what they planned in the classroom. Any child, no matter how small, or tall, can make a difference in their community. Young Heroes shows you how. Join us, as we lead change in our communities.

Eduardo Carrancho from Lisbon Portugal is 9-years-old and has already been a Helen Doron English student for 5 years at the Odivelas english Learning Centre. His big sister, Beatriz, is 20 years old and his parents, Pedro and Isabel, are both economists.

Eduardo’s Dad, Pedro, proudly told us about his son’s progress so far: “Eduardo is close to being bilingual (Portuguese and English) and I think he can become a perfect English speaker, thanks to his Helen Doron classes! He has lots of fun in class and also finds them interesting and as a result, his English is definitely better than his friends who don’t attend Helen Doron!”

Why do Eduardo’s parents feel it is important for him to have such a high level of English? “English is and always will be the global language. So, any education must include English from an early age. When deciding which programme to send him to, we chose Helen Doron, as it is is a more natural method. “

Additionally, the enthusiastic Dad appreciates the easy-to-use apps that augment the Helen Doron programmes, in particular the Jump with Joey and More Jump with Joey apps, both of which incorporate augmented reality technologies.

Pedro reflects that he always recommends Helen Doron to friends as “the unique methodology is a way to learn a foreign language with no effort.”
