Spela Ramovs is the proud mother of four-year-old Rui, who has been a Helen Doron English student in Kranj, Slovenia since he was only a year old. His baby sister will also begin classes soon, as the family loves to travel and know they need good English to communicate anywhere in the world.

Spela tells us that she and her husband often recommend Helen Doron to others. “The whole family is actually enjoying Helen Doron, as we are also learning new words we didn’t know before. This way we are stretching our vocabulary beyond business use of English, learning flowers, birds, breeds etc. – interesting indeed! It is really exciting for all the students, but the most valuable for us is seeing our son learning a second language through fun games and movement naturally, with no pressure. We are delighted we can offer this experience to our kids, having Helen Doron in Kranj and being able to attend. Big thanks goes to our teachers that are creative and full of energy and welcome you with a big smile. Rui loves attending class and looks forward to going!”

Recently, our very own Helen Doron was a guest speaker at the renowned EdCrunch Conference in Moscow, Russia. There she spoke on several panels and delivered a master class entitled, ‘Bilinguals: How to teach a child to speak several languages, easily and naturally.’

In what was hailed afterwards as one of the highlights of the conference, Helen invited child participants – each one prouder than the next to show off their Helen Doron franchise-gained English skills – to help her demonstrate how a Helen Doron English class looks. The message came through loud and clear: children learn best when the teaching methodology is fun, natural and stress-free. That means starting with a teacher who can embody a passion and love for teaching the material at hand, and who incorporates games, music and dance, so that learning becomes a seamless part of one’s life experience.

Helen’s brand has become extremely popular throughout Russia. In fact, according to Anna Tseluyko, Helen Doron Master Franchisee for Krasnodar, Russia, Helen’s talks were among the most popular at the conference:

„The halls where they were held were overcrowded, with people standing at the back and sitting on the floor, as there was not enough room to accommodate everyone. Afterwards, Helen was mobbed by extremely excited people who wanted to meet and take a photo with her – even citizens from small towns in Russia that don’t even have any Helen Doron schools.”

As a panellist for the ‘Phygital Generation,’ Helen shared her thoughts on how to touch the minds and hearts of Generation Z members, while in the ‘More is Better, or is it? How and why to teach a child several languages?’ panel, she brought forth the incontrovertible evidence that the existence of 6,000 languages in a world that boasts only 200 countries means that most people in the world are multilingual!

„Once we see that and can put the myths out of the way, we can start to talk about language education,” said Helen to the hall’s attentive listeners.

This blog is part two in a discussion on language development in children and how they can easily learn a second, third – even fourth language. In this second part of our discussion, we’ll start off by looking at the importance of exposure to language.

Input = Output

You may remember this formula from Part I, which says that if you want your child to be bilingual, you must expose him or her to multiple languages as much and as often as possible.

Perhaps there is a babysitter who can speak to them in his or her native language? Maybe there is a nearby bilingual kindergarten. And let’s not forget about grandma and grandpa: If they were born in another country, perhaps they can speak to the child in their native tongue?

Providing multi-language exposure is giving your child a gift for life. And that gift involves far more than mere language – you are actually developing their brain’s plasticity, which means their ability to change and adapt, and we all know how important that is. Quite simply, nothing develops the brain more than learning another language, or two, or even three. In fact, studies have shown that the benefits of learning numerous languages are multiple, from improving concentration and memory, to staving off dementia, later in life.

Correcting mistakes – how and when

This is a big issue for a lot of parents, and I’m often asked about the proper way to correct a child who is learning to speak. There is no one rule for every child or every circumstance, but a general guide, especially for the early years, would be to pay far more attention to what goes into your child, than what comes out. In fact, if you make sure the right stuff goes in, then eventually, that is what’s going to come out

Parent-child connection

The last thing we’ll look at in this post is the importance of the adult-child relationship.

Early language development happens when there is trust, love and connection between you and the child. After your baby is born, a remarkable interplay begins to happen: You speak and the baby responds by imitating you. You then show empathy by imitating the child’s expressions. You don’t even realize that you are doing it but you are, and this continues, back and forth, building the connection between you, which supports their language development.

As the child gets older, the relationship develops, and this interplay of facial expressions transforms into verbal communication. And here is where reading to the child can take on several purposes. If you don’t become too become fixated to what’s printed on the page, then reading time can actually become a springboard into rich conversations.

When I read to my granddaughter, Ria, she’s got a million questions. I was recently reading to her a lovely story about a mouse that was so small, no one else in the jungle ever noticed he was there. It was a marvellous book, but what really captured Ria were the bandages on the mouse’s tail. What had happened to his tail, she wanted to know. I explained that the elephant had trodden on its tail and the zebra had sat on it. She must have asked me the same question dozens of times because that is what intrigued her. And even had her questions borne no relevance to the story, it wouldn’t have mattered – because she was engaged with the book, and worried about what was going to happen, and relating to it from her own life. Most importantly, it became a catalyst for our conversation, through which her ability to understand and express language was being nourished.

Conclusion

It is truly never too early to begin introducing more than one language to your child. The earlier the better, because the window for learning a language at mother-tongue level stays open only until the age of seven. By doing so, you are helping to develop your child’s brain for life, and in a way that extends well beyond mere language learning. You are helping them to become more tolerant of others, and to develop the capacity for richer concepts, which will accompany them all the days of their life.

Millions of children have learnt English with the unique Helen Doron methodology.

September 3, 2019

Sponsored by Sina Education, the 2019 Sina Chinese Teachers Ceremony and the 9th 5-star Teachers Competition Award Ceremony were held in Beijing. Many well-known local educators, principals, outstanding teachers and educational practitioners participated and shared their wonderful stories, highlighting the strengths of these outstanding teachers and educators.

Three octogenarian educators with a combined age of more than 240 years kicked off the ceremony. Li Jinchu, chairman of Beijing Jianhua Experimental School, encouraged more teachers to innovate educational concepts and provide students with an ongoing education.

According to Liang Ying, Director of Sina Education, the key to the future is education, the key to education is the teacher. Every teacher is a „Teacher of Life”, a pioneer and leader in pursuit of excellence and innovation-driven development.

Various awards were announced at the end of the Chinese Teachers Ceremony. After months of intense competition among more than 1,000 teachers and teams from hundreds of educational institutions across the country, Helen Doron English, by virtue of its distinctive curriculum advantages and excellent teachers, were awarded the title of „5-Star Kid’s English Institution”.

Since 2010, there have been nine Sina 5-Star Teachers Competitions, attracting nearly 10,000 teachers. The competition highlighted the outstanding achievements of the teachers, celebrating their dedication to education, innovation and professionalism.

This year, Helen Doron English was shortlisted in the competition after several rounds of selection, online voting and evaluation, emphasizing the professional teaching strength and all-round quality of Helen Doron in the field of children’s English education.

What is the key to Helen Doron’s success?

The Highest Levels of Professionalism

Helen Doron English has always regarded its teachers as an essential part in the development process, ensuring the quality of teaching and research. The perfect teacher training system and pre-service assessment mechanism require that every teacher must pass the rigorous Helen Doron English teacher training and ongoing seminars. As a result of the outstanding methodology, Helen Doron English teachers take pride in their students’ excellent rating of 95% on the 2019 Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) – Young Learners exams.

Where Children Come First

Helen Doron English is committed to providing the highest quality English education for children, based on their developmental needs, stimulating their interest and creativity in learning English. Each course offers themes and content based on children’s developmental stages. As a result, the students are motivated to learn and reach their highest potential. Helen Doron teachers not only focus on professional excellence but love children and have a passion for education. They teach with joy, caring for each child’s learning needs.

P.I.G.S Methodology

P.I.G.S, the unique methodology of Helen Doron English, cleverly combines props, games and songs which are key to the teaching method. Teaching props are integrated into all Helen Doron programmes because they increase children’s participation in activities and boost their interest in learning. More than 2,000 teaching aids are used for each level, with 70% of them hand-made by the teachers.

4. Promotes Learning Naturally

In the Helen Doron classroom, there are no desks, chairs or benches, and kids sit on round mats on the floor, learning and sharing together. A warm and cosy setting enables teachers to interact with children comfortably and easily. There are only 6-8 students in each class, ensuring that each one receives personalized attention and greater opportunities to practice English. Research has shown that group learning is more effective than private tutors.

The award affirms the global appeal of Helen Doron English and the success of its unique methodology. China’s children will benefit from the very best education with the highest teaching standards.

Aware of the benefits of early language learning, proud Croatian parents Marina and Leonard started their two daughters, Ana (4) and Maria (2) in Helen Doron classes when they were babies, and are thrilled that they did!

“Both of the girls are very happy to come to Helen Doron classes at the Lendava, Slovenia Learning Studio where they enjoy the activities, and love to dance, sing and play with the teacher and the other kids. Even when they are at home, they play that they are in English class! Ana’s English is much better than her school classmates, as she has correct pronunciation and a good vocabulary. Both girls are very proud of their English progress and like to talk to everyone about their Helen Doron teacher, friends from class and fun activities.”

Marina, who wishes she had a better command of the English language, explains why she insisted on sending her children at such a young age. “If you are good in English, you will have more self-confidence in school and qualify for student exchange programmes. Adults with good English do better in global business settings and from my personal experience, the best job positions are reserved for people who are fluent in English.”

Why Helen Doron and not one of their competitors? “Helen Doron is designed for children from when they are babies, when the brain is like a sponge and it is easy to learn. The courses are fun and full of songs and activities for children and they learn English like a mother tongue, first learning vocabulary they use in daily conversation, and later learning writing is easy, as they already know the words.” The family also uses the wide variety of Helen Doron educational apps at home, and appreciates all of the tools provided.

Energetic Anika from Seville, Spain has been loved by her students for 7 years. She shared a bit of her Helen Doron English journey: “My family speaks only Spanish, and the tiniest bit of French. They’ve encouraged me since I was little to excel at something, and I tried karate, swimming, art… everything! But I wasn’t good at any of those. Turns out, my mother discovered me singing “The Beatles” when I was four, so English it was! And I’ve kept learning since.”

Immediately after earning her degree in English, Anika was grateful that no one at the Los Remedios, Seville Learning Centre thought twice about hiring a pink-haired (now blue) 21-year-old recent college graduate, giving her an opportunity to express herself professionally.

She reflects on how the Helen Doron methodology differs from other English courses. “I’ve seen children loathing English, looking at it as a subject to be memorized and used only in exams, with no real use or functionality. Our pupils love to come here. We provide them with experiences based on their personalities and interests; we have the chance to make them love English. I create games they will enjoy, since preparing the classes is such a great part of the methodology. All teachers prepare materials together, creating a synergy that doesn’t happen anywhere else.”

Her message to parents thinking about enrolling their children in Helen Doron classes? “Do it! English is an unavoidable tool in the future of your children, and the earlier they start the better. They will learn not only the language, but its functionality, its culture, and they will learn with a smile.”

Slovenian siblings Noah, age 10, and his sister Elina, age 6, have attended classes for many years at Helen Doron English, Lendava.

Their mother, Anita, reports that all the parents of students in the learning centre are very happy with the choice they made to educate their children there. “Classes are based on a new and fresh approach, adapted to the child’s age & skills and supported by the most advanced and proven methods.”

Both children are excited about going to their lessons, and there is a significant difference between those who attend Helen Doron and those who do not. “Noah pointed out that in Helen Doron classes he can be much more involved. He can always express his opinion and is always in close interaction with the teacher. There is much more experiential learning (learning by doing through games, playing, music…)”

Anita reflects that she found Helen Doron through recommendations from friends, and she and her husband have recommended the school to many others, based on their positive experiences. She emphasized the importance of speaking good English. “English is a global language with which you communicate with the whole world. It opens a lot of doors in the business world and not knowing English these days is not an option. The methodology really works. With a proven method and highly skilled teachers, your child’s success is guaranteed.”

Ingrid Buják hails from the bilingual (Slovak and Hungarian) town of Galanta, Slovakia. She loves her career with Helen Doron and found the unique methodology online, which perfectly suited what she was searching for. Starting off as a teacher and becoming a Learning Centre Franchisee in 2011, she finds the balance to be the best of both worlds. “Teaching nourishes my creativity and I love to see how children learn joyfully. On the other hand, I can apply my managerial qualification to run my school and to lead and motivate my teachers.”

She enthused about the methodology and how effective and comprehensive Helen Doron is. “Students who started at the age of 4-5 now speak fluently, with Cambridge certificates proving their knowledge. We have prepared our students for Cambridge exams for 6 years and their results are always outstanding. I love that the methodology is playful, children pick up the language easily and enjoy the whole learning process. Classes are full of fun and positive reinforcement and we teach children not only a foreign language but important values for life.”

Her message for parents considering enrolling their children at Helen Doron: “We live in a multilingual world, the more languages you speak, the better for your children. Give them a chance to learn a new language in an easy, natural way without even realizing they are learning, as they are having so much fun.”

Sanja Župan Vuković from Zagreb, Croatia grew up in a home where learning new cultures and languages were part of life. Her mother is an English teacher and “spoke English to us from very early on so we often spoke English amongst each other, switching seamlessly from Croatian to English.”

The bright, enthusiastic young woman was excited when as a student; she came across an online ad looking for English speakers who are creative, describing herself perfectly! Sanja was not familiar with Helen Doron, but quickly understood that this was the ideal career for her and now in her 4th year of teaching babies from 8 months old all the way up to Teen Talent courses. She has additionally taken on the role of Learning Centre Franchisee.

Without a doubt, this job is hard to compare to any other. I worked for the United Nations Development Programme and later for a World Bank project implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection. As great as these experiences were, neither of those jobs encompassed as many of my skills and ambitions as this one does. Sitting in an office in front of a computer for hours on end can never be as uplifting and fulfilling as teaching and creating props and seeing smiles on children’s faces is to me. Yes, sometimes it’s hard, but most of the time I can’t believe my luck.”

She went on to explain why the Helen Doron method works better than more traditional techniques. “Helen Doron English classes are incomparably better. Our courses are full of different activities – from singing to role-playing, from colouring to reading, from discussing different topics to competing in solving problems—and all that in English. Even with the youngest children, we don’t translate, we demonstrate. The children are immersed in the English language so they learn more quickly, without effort. We encourage and praise them, using only positive reinforcement…and it works!”

Why did Sanja decide to become a franchisee? “Born to an English teacher and an Economist, I like to joke that this was meant to be my career from the beginning. It wasn’t always apparent, but career paths often seem like a weird maze no one has a map for, until you finally realise you’re equipped with the right experience and tools you need to finally take charge.

Of course, luck is also an important ingredient. Last school year I became aware that I was comfortable with all aspects of being a Helen Doron teacher. I knew I was doing my job well.. Having a boss who tells you ‘good job’ and means it, who respects you and laughs with you – is a great advantage. At the end of the school year, she asked if anyone was interested in becoming a franchisee for the Samobor area. I saw my opportunity and grabbed it with the full support of my family.. And so here I am. I hope I’ll continue to do well and one day have my own employees who are as happy at their workplace as the children who attend Helen Doron English classes are.“
